The Meaning of Nicole

Today is Namesake Day. Do you know the meaning of your name?

nametag

Nicole is of Greek origin meaning people of victory or victorious people and is pronounced Ni-Kohl (or Neeee-Cole if you’re traveling to Haiti on mission trip.)

Urban Dictionary says Nicole is an awesome person that is often imitated but never duplicated. A Nicole is someone who is omnipotent. Gorgeous. Intelligent. Mysterious. Witty. Hilarious. Out-going. Creative. Seductive, yet also tough. Street-smart and experienced. Brave. Enduring. A wonderful mother. Nothing and nobody can compare to a Nicole in any aspect. Mess with a Nicole, or her family, and you will regret ever being born.

I can’t verify the wonderful mother part. Perhaps I’ll get to find out one day. Or not. That’s a big decision.

Most fascinating to me is the Egyptian hieroglyphic translation of Nicole using logographic (picture) and alphabetic (letter) symbols.

I’m no scientist or psychologist, but I agree with these symbols. I’ll give you the Egyptian translation with a few Nicole-isms:

Water — the Nile River
I’ve been known to soak up the sun while sipping fruity beverages in a lake, river, pool, ocean, or the Dead Sea. Plus, I must have water to make sweet tea.

Reed — hide
I’m an only child and as much as I love socializing and being with large groups of family and friends, I need my space and quiet time too. If I lived in Egypt, I’d probably hide in the reeds along the Nile River and read a book!

Basket — food storage
This is a no-brainer. I love food. I love to eat. I love to cook. I love to provide sustenance for others. I like to please people by making their bellies happy. I have a rule at my house: you cannot leave hungry or thirsty. It offends me and makes me very sad. If you have special dietary needs or allergy restrictions, I understand and will do my best to accommodate. And, Lord have mercy, I hope you like sweet tea!!!!

Quail — protection
The older I get, the more intuitive I become. I think I’ll always be sensitive and defend the underdog. I avoid conflict at all costs, but that doesn’t mean I won’t spit biting words before I retreat. And, if I am not comfortable with a situation, I leave immediately. No questions asked, no hesitation, no pause, just go!

Lion — leader
The lion is a symbol of strength, authority, and natural leadership. Being an only child, I matured quickly and, in turn, became very independent. There are certainly situations when I would rather lead than follow. I’d make a great NASCAR driver. =)

What is the meaning of your name? If you were to research your name using Egyptian hieroglyphics, would the symbols represent you well?

  1. I love learning about this kind of thing, it truly fascinates me. I know my name means ‘light’ in Greek, but I have yet to look up anything else. Have a great day awesome one :)

    • Thanks, Helen! This was a fun post to research, especially when I found the hieroglyphics. I’m fascinated by history and heritage, and I’m also convinced previous civilizations were way smarter and wiser than their years. Happy Namesake Day!!!
